Why I Always Chase the Golden Hour

There's a 20-minute window every evening where the Caribbean light turns everything into a painting. Here's why I've built my entire career around that window.

There's a moment right before the photograph that most people never see. The photographer positions the light. The subject relaxes their shoulders. And then — for just a fraction of a second — something real emerges.

That's the photograph worth taking.

I've spent over 15 years chasing those moments across St. Croix, across the Caribbean, across continents. And what I've learned is that the best photographs are never an accident. They are the result of deep preparation, genuine human connection, and an almost obsessive attention to light.

The Role of Light

Light is the first language of photography. Not the camera. Not the subject. The light. Every great photograph I've ever taken started with me understanding the light — where it was coming from, where it was going, and what it was saying.

In the Caribbean, we're fortunate to have light that tells stories on its own. The way the golden hour wraps around a face here is different from anywhere else in the world. It's warmer. It's more patient. It lingers.

The Human Element

But light alone doesn't make a great photograph. The human element does. I spend the first 30 minutes of every session just talking. Not shooting. Just being present with whoever is in front of my lens. Because when a person forgets about the camera, that's when the truth comes out.

What You Take Away

A great photograph is an act of preservation. It says: *this moment mattered. This person was here. This light fell exactly this way on this day.*

And when you look at it 20 years from now, you'll feel exactly what you felt then. Not a recreation — a resurrection.

That's what we're after.
